Description
Photograph of Pysanky done by artist Shari Bailey on a variety of egg shells which include chicken, goose, turkey and ostrich eggs.
Pysanky is an art form, of Ukrainian origins, in which egg shells are repeatedly drawn on with melted wax and then dyed. This step is performed for each color on the egg. Different tools such as a pinhead or a kistka (or kistky) can be used to apply the wax. Eggs of all sizes, shapes and colors can be used in this art form. Some artists leave the insides within the egg, however, Shari prefers to empty hers out through a tiny hole that she carefully creates on the bottom of the shell using a special tool and then drains and rinses the inside. The shells are very fragile and need to be handled with care.
