Artist's Description

Photograph of killdeer putting on a theatrical display to protect the undisclosed location of their nest. (Harvey County, Kansas)

The Killdeer is my favorite of the plovers. It has a very distinct call, two stripes on the front chest and red eyes. I enjoy sitting and watching them as the run and then stop, run and then stop again. Killdeer are common throughout all the United States.

Killdeer nests are on the ground and very difficult to find. However, you will know when you are close to one. First comes the loud alarm calls, then the theatrics. They will move away from their nest and try to draw you to them with noises, feather displays and faking that they are injured. I encountered this pair while weeding my garden.
