Photograph of a Differential Grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis). This species of grasshopper is a very common pest to the farmers of the Midwest. It is easily recognized by the striped pattern on their legs. Their populations are controlled now, but in the past they would come in great swarms and literally destroy all vegetation in their path.
